We sipped our way to our three favorite East Bay shakes—all made with premium ice cream and served cold and frosty in tall fountain glasses.

Vally Medlyn’s: Sunkist

This customer favorite is a must-try. Made with orange sherbet and orange soda, and topped with a spiraling mound of whipped cream, this sweet, tangy shake tastes like an orange Creamsicle. Comes with a long cookie “straw” (in case you need a bit more sugar); $4.50. 330 Hartz Ave., Danville, (925) 552-6449.

Hubcaps: Chocolate Banana

At Hubcaps, you’ll see customers slurping shakes at every table. Chocolate and vanilla ice cream, fresh bananas, and whipped cream—this is a banana split in a glass. The shake is not so thick you’re forced to eat the whole thing with a spoon, but you could; $4.99. 1548 Bonanza St., Walnut Creek, (925) 945-6960, hubcapsdiner.com.

Barney’s: Turkish Coffee

When is a shake more like a rocket that will shoot you straight into the stratosphere? This shake is as purely and sweetly creamy as any, but the delicious bits floating in an ice-cream sea are crunchy, and they may keep you up until next week; $4.75. 4162 Piedmont Ave. and 5819 College Ave., Oakland; 1600 Shattuck Ave. and 1591 Solano Ave., Berkeley; barneyshamburgers.com.
